Tree micro-projects for the Health Centre in Muhungu - Burundi

Project 1 : Drinkable water for the health centre in Muhungu.

Location : Muhungu is one of the 23 hills of Mabayi.

Context: The community clinic is built by the inhabitants. Due to lack of financial means the nurses and the workers get water from the well at the foot of the Hill. However there is a source which could provide the dispensary with drinking water. Providing the health centre with drinking water would be a very positive thing.

Responsible for the micro-project: Bararwendera Josephine.

Follow-up of the project
Follow up report 1st quarter October – December 2012

The activities carried out during the 1st trimester 2012 are:

  1. Purchase of the material for electricity installation and the amenities for the supply of drinking water for the health centre of Muhungu. Transport of the equipment from Bujumbura to the beneficiary hill.
  2. Installation of lighting equipment and photos.
  3. Digging the channels for placing the tubes for the application of tap water to the health centre. The excavation of the trenches was accomplished by the local population as an expression of their participation in the development of their hill Muhungu.
  4. For the time being we are looking for a skilled plumber for the connection of the drinkable water. End of January 2013 the health centre would be provided with potable water.

Ultimately, the health centre is since the month of October 2011 equipped with lighting.
The problems that popped up are:

  1. At the bank we could not collect more than the sum of 2300 euro. So we had to wait to pick up the remaining sum.
  2. An error was detected with one of the solar panels. The panel has been returned and restored.

In the attachments you’ll find some pictures of the work already carried out.

The population of the hill Muhungu and the surrounding hills are pleased with these improvements and thank you for the wonderful gift that was offered them. The residents will express this when you’ll come over to visit  the realisations.

Follow-up report march 2013

In the course of this quarter, the tubes were placed in the channels, but the water pressure was very large so that the small tubes 16/32 cm had to be replaced by larger.

While for the best solution, another benefactor, the Italian co-operation, has a made a reservoir and replaced the piping by larger ones. The Italian co-operation did this work in addition to the construction of a maternity ward they build.

For the moment the water gets to the health center but the starting place is in poor condition and must be repaired. We are discussing with the parties concerned, the beneficiaries and the technicians to provide drinking water at a residence occupied by vulnerable people such as widows and orphans, using the lines that are not used by the health center. If you want to make a different proposal for the use of these lines, we gladly accept it.

Concerning the lighting there is no problem: the maternity ward and the health center are illuminated.

I am sure that the remaining work will be ready in the course of the 3rd quarter, so against the month of June. At that time I will take pictures as proof of the final finish of the project 36 Muhungu 2012.
We repeat our sincere thanks to your organization committed to address the issues which keep on hurting our population.

Follow-up report July 2013

Name project: Health centre Muhungu

General status: Final report

The project 36, health centre Muhungu, consists of 2 parts being lightning based on solar energy and providing drinkable water.
The lightning part was implanted smoothly without any problems.

Progress since last status report:

The part to provide drinkable water just has been completed, on another place as originally proposed though (see first report).
The attached pictures shows the implementation of the drinkable water tap, close to the primary and secondary school and the church. The children in school, students and habitants are very pleased and relieved that they don’t have to walk big distances daily to collect drinkable water at the base of the mountain. They are very grateful and wish all of you a long life. Thanks to the clean water there is a slow but clear improvement in the health of the habitants.
The whole team of Vleugels van Hoop can congratulate themselves and be proud on the positive and well-doing results of this project.
